We Know Starting Therapy Can Bring Up A Lot—Here Are Some Answers To Common Questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • In a 15-minute consultation call, we’ll have a quick chat about what brings you to therapy and what you’re hoping to work on. It’s a chance for you to ask any questions about how therapy works and for us to explain a bit about our approach. We’ll also talk about whether we’re a good fit to work together and how we can move forward. No pressure at all—just a relaxed conversation to help you decide if therapy feels right for you.

  • The number of sessions needed depends on many factors such as the goals for therapy and the nature of the challenges you're facing.

    Some general guidelines include:

    1. Short-Term Therapy: For specific issues like stress, anxiety, or a life transition, 5-12 sessions might be enough. These are typically focused, solution-oriented sessions.

    2. Ongoing or Long-Term Therapy: For deeper or more complex concerns, such as trauma, chronic mental health conditions, or ongoing relationship issues, therapy might last for several months or even years. Sessions could be weekly or bi-weekly depending on your progress.

    3. Frequency: Initially, therapy is often scheduled on a weekly basis, with sessions tapering off as progress is made. Some people may continue for ongoing support or maintenance therapy, with sessions spaced further apart.

Ultimately, the length of therapy is something that can be discussed and adjusted based on your needs and progress throughout the process. Your therapist will work with you to figure out the right approach for your situation.

  • It’s completely normal to have things you don’t want to share in therapy, and that’s okay. Therapy is a space where you should feel safe and comfortable, so you’re in control of what you choose to disclose. You don’t have to share anything you’re not ready to talk about. Over time, as trust builds between you and your therapist, you may feel more comfortable opening up about certain topics, but it’s always at your own pace. If something feels too difficult or sensitive, it’s okay to let your therapist know, and they can help you navigate that at a pace that works for you.

  • Yes, psychotherapist are legally required to keep your information confidential. This ensures that you can discuss your feelings and experiences openly, knowing that your information is protected. Keep in mind there are a few limits to Confidentiality. For example, a therapist may be required to break confidentiality if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, there is a court order that requires the therapist to release records or reports, the client reports someone else is at risk or harm from abuse or neglect (especially children, elderly people or other vulnerable populations).

Clients are informed about the confidentiality policy at the start of therapy, including the exceptions to confidentiality, so they understand their rights. This ensures that clients are aware of how their information will be handled and under what circumstances it might be disclosed.

  • It’s great to hear that you’re eager to start therapy! The good news is, there is no waitlist, so we can get you scheduled and start working together right away.
